Pharmacology in the BPharm and MPharm
Australian students meet pharmacology across the degree and then apply it during the intern year, which ends in the Australian Pharmacy Council intern written examination. That sequence rewards understanding over memorisation, because the gap between finishing a module and being examined on its content can be years. Note that OPRA, described below, is a different pathway: it is the assessment for pharmacists who qualified overseas and are seeking Australian registration, not the route domestic students take. What OPRA is, and what it replaced
The Australian Pharmacy Council administers the assessments overseas-trained pharmacists complete, and the Overseas Pharmacist Readiness Assessment replaced the older Knowledge Assessment of Pharmaceutical Sciences from March 2025. This matters more than a name change suggests, because a great deal of KAPS-era preparation guidance still circulating online describes an assessment that no longer exists in that form. Check the Council current published format and dates before committing to a study plan.
Competency-based rather than recall-based
The assessment is built around readiness to practise rather than around reciting facts, so questions tend to place knowledge in a practice context. Mechanism knowledge is the part that survives that translation, because a candidate who understands why a drug behaves as it does can apply it to an unfamiliar scenario, whereas a memorised fact only answers the question it was memorised for.
Plan around the sitting windows
The Council also runs the CAOP and Intern Written examinations, each with its own registration period and sitting dates published annually. Registration windows close well before the sitting, so the practical risk is missing an administrative deadline rather than being underprepared.
