Pharmacology on the MPharm
Most UK students meet pharmacology properly in the second and third years of the MPharm, usually taught alongside therapeutics rather than as a standalone subject. That integration is helpful clinically and awkward for revision, because drug information arrives scattered across condition-based teaching rather than gathered by class. Building your own class-level view as you go, so that every beta-blocker sits in one place in your head regardless of which module introduced it, is what makes later revision fast. It is also what makes the registration assessment manageable, since that assessment expects you to apply the same pharmacology across unfamiliar clinical scenarios.
What the GPhC registration assessment involves
The General Pharmaceutical Council is the independent regulator for pharmacy in England, Scotland and Wales, and it sets the registration assessment that foundation trainee pharmacists must pass. The assessment sits at the end of a structured foundation training year rather than immediately after graduation, which is a meaningful difference from the North American model and changes how preparation is paced across the year.
Why British practice leans on one formulary
UK practice is anchored to a single national formulary, so candidates are expected to reason from that reference rather than from memorised brand names. That changes the skill being tested: the question is less often what a drug is called and more often whether you can apply the right information once you have found it. Mechanism knowledge is what makes that application fast, because knowing why a drug does what it does tells you which part of the monograph matters.
Calculations carry real weight
Calculations are a substantial component and a common reason for a near miss. The arithmetic itself is universal, but the conventions are not: units, expected precision and whether answers are typed or selected all vary between systems. Practising in the format your assessment actually uses matters as much as practising the arithmetic.
