Powder volume is the final reconstituted volume minus the volume of diluent added, and it exists because dry powder occupies space once dissolved. Adding the full final volume as diluent gives a solution weaker than labelled, which is the error the displacement value prevents.

When to use the powder volume calculator
Use when reconstituting any dry powder injection or suspension where the label states a final volume. The powder occupies real volume, so adding the full final volume of diluent overshoots it.
The powder volume formula
Diluent volume = final volume required − powder volume. Powder volume, sometimes called the displacement value, is the space the dry powder itself occupies once dissolved.
Worked example
An antibiotic suspension must make 100 mL and the powder displaces 8 mL. Diluent to add = 100 − 8 = 92 mL, which yields exactly 100 mL once dissolved.
The mistake that costs marks
Adding the stated final volume as diluent is the standard error and produces a dilute, under-strength preparation. The displacement value is specific to the product and is printed in the literature, so it must be read rather than estimated.
